About the PPSA
The PPSA is an independent, non-profit organization managed and supported by its members. It is the only national institute for professional photographers in Southern Africa.

The Main Objectives
The PPSA promotes the interests and welfare of its members, and endeavours to improve their professional status.
The PPSA also represents the interest of the profession in general, by promoting high ethical standards and better service to the public, continuously updating the practical knowledge and understanding of its members through workshops, and stimulating public awareness of the benefits of using the services of professional photographers.
The PPSA acts as an examining body within the industry. It publishes an annual register of qualified members, together with allied occupations, that meet PPSA standards.
This register is circulated to users and buyers of photography throughout Southern Africa.

History
A number of professional photographic groups were founded in South Africa during 1943. In 1961 they were incorporated into the ‘South African Institute of Photographers’, structured on the British Photographic Society model of that time. In 1990 the name was changed to ‘Professional Photographers of Southern Africa’ in keeping with the challenges of a changing society.

World Council
The PPSA is a founder member of the World Council of Professional Photographers.

National Organisation
The National Council is a properly constituted body, comprising a President, divisional chairpersons and elected members. The Council formulate and direct policy matters relating to professional photography in Southern Africa. They also organise conferences, exhibitions, publications etc. at a national level.

Regional Organisation
The national membership is divided into regional groups – Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth.
Chairpersons and Committees are elected annually to organise local meetings, exhibitions of photography, workshops, representations to the local business community, and other activities important to realizing the PPSA’s main objectives.
