About the PPSA
The PPSA is an independent, non-profit organization managed and
supported by its members. It is the only national institute for
professional photographers in Southern Africa.
The Main Objectives
The PPSA promotes the interests and welfare of its members, and
endeavours to improve their professional status.
The PPSA also represents the interest of the profession in
general, by promoting high ethical standards and better service to
the public, continuously updating the practical knowledge and
understanding of its members through workshops, and stimulating
public awareness of the benefits of using the services of
professional photographers.
The PPSA acts as an examining body within the industry. It
publishes an annual register of qualified members, together with
allied occupations, that meet PPSA standards.
This register is circulated to users and buyers of photography
throughout Southern Africa.
History
A number of professional photographic groups were founded in South
Africa during 1943. In 1961 they were incorporated into the ‘South
African Institute of Photographers’, structured on the British
Photographic Society model of that time. In 1990 the name was
changed to ‘Professional Photographers of Southern Africa’ in
keeping with the challenges of a changing society.
World Council
The PPSA is a founder member of the World Council of Professional
Photographers.
National Organisation
The National Council is a properly constituted body, comprising a
President, divisional chairpersons and elected members. The
Council formulate and direct policy matters relating to
professional photography in Southern Africa. They also organise
conferences, exhibitions, publications etc. at a national level.
Regional Organisation
The national membership is divided into regional groups –
Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth.
Chairpersons and Committees are elected annually to organise local
meetings, exhibitions of photography, workshops, representations
to the local business community, and other activities important to
realizing the PPSA’s main objectives. |
